Beam Up (solo music) and DJ Delay are the cross-informing projects of Brian May. Both trawl the rich seas of traditional musics of the planet and beam down messages from geometry and the future to compose. Beam Up plays bass, trumpet, percussion, analogue bleepers, software synthesis (Supercollider) and machines. Sonic interests are bass, the effects of frequency + rhythm on the body and mind with a "music is music" attitude towards gernre-fication pigeonholing. 2004-5 was spent in Berlin. Brrrr.
He moved to Melbourne in '89, zooming in on radio first, hosting host of "Into The Groovy" on PBSFM from 1990-2002. After more than 600 shows of dub, jungle, experimental rhythmical electronic and beefheartesque and indo-arabic sounds a move to Japan was in order. 2002-2004 saw Delay play at beach parties, up mountains and in groovy Japanese clubs with awesome lung collapsing soundsystems. There was even one gig for the opening of a Pachinko parlour! Bandwise, he was a member of Breather Hole + Circushead and founder of High Pass Filter & Hicstep. Beam Up recorded new material and released on Osaka's Soulfire label and remixed the Bush Of Ghosts for Bus. Beam Up became a temporary member of the Bush Of Ghosts and played a few shows with them in Osaka and Tokyo. Lots of shows around Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Tokyo. 2004-5 was spent in freezing cold Berlin, where Delay played in a few shows in a variety of bars, ex squats, and even a huge outdoor trance party!? 24 hour party people may have been about the Hacienda and Manchester in the late 80s but Berlin holds the crown for now. Currently residing in Melbourne and writing new dub, outernational dancehall, elektrobalkan, geometrical and speedbeat tunes. Running 3 unique music nights in town (Balkan, Dub, and Animation). EU tour in September/October 2006 Beam Up tunes are out in Japan (on Bus, Soulfire), Australia (Earthcore, Kooky, Green Ant, Kryptonites, If?, PBSFM, Zomba), UK (Noodles, Corroborree), and EU (Hymen). Brian has performed in support of a few famous people along the way: Beastie Boys, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fugazi, Lee Scratch Perry + Mad Professor, African Headcharge, The Boredoms, Audio Active, DJ Spooky, Fun-da-mental, Bernd Friedmann, Rockers Hi-Fi, Salmonella Dub, The Evolution Control Committee.
